The war in Ukraine From the Perspective of Geopolitics

doc. Ing. Dr. Štefan Danics, PhD., Police Academy of the Czech Republic in Prague, Faculty of Security Management, Department of Security Studies

The article analyses the war in Ukraine from a geopolitical perspective, as national interests and power calculus are again asserted in international politics. Ukraine is not being fought only over Ukraine, because the war has a global context in the new competition between world powers for territory, seas, and raw materials for the livelihood of the population. The broader geopolitical context makes it possible to map not only Russia’s but also the US’s interests in the area, as both powers seek to draw Ukraine into their sphere of influence, which is of vital security importance. Moreover, Russia is trying to realise its imperial geopolitical ambitions on the basis of a revisionist strategy that does not hesitate to deploy military force. The article assesses the geopolitical implications of Russia’s aggressive revisionist policy in relation to global actors, but also in relation to the existing international order and security architecture.

Keywords: War in Ukraine, return of geopolitics, geopolitical ambitions, spheres of influence, living space, military geographic pincers, Russian revisionist strategy.
