Petroleum is the world’s most important energy source and it is a key material for the chemical industry and transportation. The size of oil sources is unknown, new sources are constantly being discovered, but the threat of exhaustion of the oil sources is definitely one of the most important global safety threats. This threat is called peak oil. The urgency of this threat depends on the question whether oil is a renewable or a non-renewable source. The economic and energetic safety of civilization in the following decades depends on this issue.
