THE COMPARISON OF PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION IN SLOVAK AND WORLDWIDE ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKS

The contribution compares the recent level of personal data protection in the online social networks with the required level, as the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party set up by Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and Council, defined it in its opinion. As the representatives of recent online social networks were chosen the worldwide famous “Facebook” and the Slovak “Pokec”. There are characterized the services of social networks and studied the fact about who is, ad effectum the Data Protection Directive, the data controller and who is the data subject. Then, it went through individual points of standpoints of the Working Party and checked, whether the mentioned services of social networks comply with the duties and recommendations in the particular point. Finally, there are summarized the results of the comparison and drew conclusions, that although the providers of social networks services try to protect the privacy of their users, so far they are not in absolute compliance with the standpoint of the Working Party.
