Šesták, Bedřich., Sabol, Jozef

The paper discusses some current issues related to the safety of new personal full-body scanners for the control of passengers at airports. The values of the exposure of persons per a scan are given and the impact of such radiation doses on the additional occurrence of cancer is illustrated. These assessments have been confronted with the danger due to the potential terrorist attack using explosives, which the assassin could have smuggled to the airplane in case when such person had not been checked by a roentgen scanner which would most probably have revealed such intention and thereby to avoid almost certain air disaster.
Keywords: air transport, radiological terrorism, full-body roentgen scanner, exposure, biological effects of radiation.
