Prison From the Perspective of the Convicts

This explorative study deals with a problem how the sentenced persons (placed in a Czech C-type prison) interpret their social reality. I carried out semi-structured interviews with seven informers and analyzed the data by the methodology of a grounded theory. This study breaks through a prevalent approach to a prison subculture as a set of negative dissocial behavior and presents a prisoner as an active human being forced to expand his/her social potential and choose his/her own strategy during the imprisonment.
