The Czech Police in Public Opinion

Mgr. Jakub Holas, Ph.D., Institute of Criminology and Social Prevention

Abstract

The article examines the issue of the Czech public’s trust in the police. It focuses on two central ideas – how the citizens’ trust in the Police of the Czech Republic has evolved over the past decades and whether the link between the attitude toward the police and fear of crime identified abroad is true. The analysis is based on data from a series of surveys conducted by the Institute of Criminology and Social Prevention, collected since 2005. Both hypotheses were confirmed. The citizens’ trust in the police has increased substantially, while citizens exhibiting higher trust in the police report lower of concern with most types of crime.
