Moral Relativism – Risk or Challenge?
PhDr. Petr Nesvadba, CSc., Faculty PA security management of the Czech Republic in Prague, Department of Social Sciences
The author subjects the phenomenon of relativism to the philosophical reflection. This phenomenon has ancient roots of thought and was also an integral aspect of further development of European thinking. It particularly comes to the fore in the “post-modern” period, which is characterized by disintegration of traditional metanarration and the loss of cultural identity of the West. The author pays attention to relativism in moral sphere; especially he emphasizes the question of the origin and the nature of moral values. In his essay he rejects to unilaterally condemn or glorify the relativism, in the most versatile way he tries to think out its “constructive” as well as its “destructive” version and offers its indisputable advantages, but also the risks of relativistic approach to the world.
