Ensuring Adequate Protection when Applying INAA for Drug Detection and Identification
doc. Ing. Jozef Sabol, DrSc., Police Academy of the Czech Republic in Prague, Faculty of Security Management, Crisis Management Department
The paper summarizes some specific procedures related to ensuring adequate protection of people and the environment during applications of instrumental neutron analysis for detecting and identifying drugs and other narcotics, which allow obtaining information about the characteristic composition of these substances. Based on this information, it is then possible to deduce the place of their origin, enabling the relevant authorities to more effectively assess the circumstances associated with their illegal transport, distribution and use of the seized dangerous substances. In addition, the article discusses the properties of some selected neutron sources. It also presents an overview of the basics of radiation protection, including the relevant quantities for quantifying exposure in routine cases and emergencies.
Keywords: drug detection, neutron activation analysis, INAA, neutron sources, radiation protection.
