The main focus of the article is an analysis of how cases involving failure of inmates to return from unguarded workplaces are presented in the media. The author points out that both the media and the Police of the Czech Republic often portray these incidents in a simplified manner as escapes, which may influence public opinion as well as the subsequent assessment of such cases by the Czech Prison Service. The article also draws attention to approaches adopted in other countries towards this type of conduct by incarcerated persons. Its aim is to analyse the various ways in which the media label violations of statutory and sub-statutory regulations related to the execution of custodial sentences in connection with the walkaway or escape of an incarcerated person.

Keywords: escape, walkaway from the workplace, inmate, disciplinary punishment, criminal sanction, prison.

Back

Resume Walkaway from the Workplace vs. Escape: How Terminology Influences Sanctions and Practices of the Czech Prison Service Mgr.
