For its determination (it is referred usually as muzzle-to-garment or muzzle-to-target distance) it is necessary to determine the bullet entrance hole and gunshot residues pattern by examining the area around this hole.

When determining the muzzle-to-target distance, it is necessary to take in conside\u00adration the unique and unrepeatable character of each shot. This uniqueness is a\u00a0result of the turbulent flow of propellant gases. For the right interpretation of results it is important to know the \u201ehistory\u201c of the examined gun – that is, what a sort of ammunition it has used before, how much of this ammo it has fired off and how the gun has been cleaned and stored.
